Retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment and play a key role in maintaining the results of treatment by preventing teeth from shifting back to their original position. After orthodontic treatment, retainers are used to hold teeth in their new position while the bone and gums around them adjust to the new alignment. By wearing retainers regularly, patients can maintain the results of their orthodontic treatment and avoid the need for further orthodontic work in the future.
Types of Retainers
Traditional "Hawley" Retainers
These are the most common type of retainer and consist of an acrylic base that fits the roof of the mouth, along with metal wires that hold the teeth in place. They are removable, adjustable, and customizable.
Clear "Essix" Retainers
These are clear retainers that fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. They are made of plastic and are virtually invisible when worn. They can be removed for eating and brushing, and are much more comfortable than traditional retainers.
Fixed Retainers
These are permanent retainers that are bonded to the back of the teeth. They are usually used for the lower front teeth and can be used to correct minor misalignments.
How to Care for Retainers
To keep retainers clean and working properly, it is important to clean them regularly with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Retainers should also be kept in a safe place when not in use and protected from heat and sunlight.
We will go over other best practices at our office when you receive your retainer.

Orthodontics is a wonderful life-long investment you are making for your child or yourself. Orthodontics not only can improve personal appearance and boost self-confidence, but it can promote better oral health.
Schedule AppointmentHow Long to Wear Retainers
The length of time patients need to wear retainers varies depending on the specific needs and the type of retainer they have.
Generally speaking, we recommend patients wear their retainers indefinitely as much as possible after ortho treatment. This is to prevent the chances of teeth becoming misaligned in the future.
Wearing your retainer will also help prevent the need for additional ortho treatments such as a second round of braces again.
Replacing Retainers
Retainers may need to be replaced periodically due to normal wear and tear or damage. It is important to replace retainers when they become worn or damaged to ensure that they continue to hold teeth in their new position.
If a retainer is lost or broken, please contact us right away to get a replacement. Delaying the replacement of a lost or broken retainer can result in teeth shifting back to their original position.
